Softshell (from English soft - soft, gentle, and English shell - shell) is a universal fabric that is used primarily in the production of outdoor clothing and footwear. Among the biggest advantages of softshell are mechanical resistance, water resistance, good thermal insulation, windproofness and breathability. Softshell does not provide absolute water resistance, however thanks to hydrophobic treatment it is able to repel water in the form of droplets that run off the fabric, thus protecting against soaking. The softshell material itself consists of three layers, namely an outer polyester layer, a membrane and an inner short-cut fleece or knit, which provides thermal comfort and prevents the body from cooling down.
The use of softshell in clothing is most appreciated during outdoor sports activities, hiking or mountaineering, where weather conditions often change. It can also be used for everyday wear, especially in damp, windy and rainy weather. This material can be found in softshell jackets, trousers, footwear, sweatshirts or gloves. Caring for softshell requires greater care and delicacy, as we want to preserve the best properties of the clothing in the long term. It is important to use the right detergent and an impregnation agent for softshell materials.
