The new Recon Tanto knife in San Mai® configuration is a fixed blade knife with unique chopping properties. It was Cold Steel that designed and popularised the "American Tanto" knife in the early 1990s. Compared to its Japanese predecessor, the American Tanto has a reinforced secondary blade that prevents damage when chopping harder materials. The Recon Tanto knife is used by military and police forces around the world. Over the last 20 years, the Recon Tanto has been involved in many armed conflicts as part of the equipment of deployed forces. Our blades made using San Mai III technology have been Cold Steel's domain for decades. San Mai III technology is based on the methods of Japanese sword makers. It is a sandwich construction blade made from layers of different hardness. Whilst the middle layer is made from hard steel with a high carbon content, the top two layers are made from much harder steel to prevent cracking of the middle layer. As a result, the blade is maximally resistant to loss of edge without the risk of breaking. However, these luxury blades are manufactured only in limited numbers. VG-10 steel, which is used to manufacture this blade, is a stainless steel with a high carbon content. The perfectly shaped knife handle made from Kraton material (Long Kray-Ex™) offers a non-slip surface. It fits perfectly in the hand and allows very fine manipulation of the knife in wet and muddy environments. The knife comes with a Secure-Ex® sheath.
