Why support and breathability depend on water-repellency...
The comfort of waterproof footwear depends on whether it supports your feet and is breathable. The structure of leather, and therefore the level of support it provides, is maintained by tanning agents. When leather absorbs water, tannins are lost, causing the leather to stiffen. When leather becomes damp, the breathability of the footwear also deteriorates, resulting in wet feet. Therefore, it is essential to maintain durable water-repellency (DWR) on your footwear.
Over time, DWR wears away and needs to be restored using Nikwax Waterproofing Wax for Leather™.

Leather is durable, breathable and provides a high level of support, making it an ideal material for footwear. During leather production, tanning agents are added to maintain the structure of the leather and prevent microbial growth. If leather becomes damp, its breathability decreases, leading to wet feet from condensation. When leather absorbs water, tannins are also lost. Nikwax Waterproofing Wax for Leather™ provides instant durable water-repellency (DWR), preventing leather from absorbing water and becoming "wet", whilst maintaining breathability. At the same time, it replenishes tanning agents to preserve the support of leather footwear without excessive softening.
Use Nikwax Waterproofing Wax for Leather™ when your footwear becomes soaked with water...
Your footwear may become soaked with water simply because it is dirty. First, try cleaning it with Nikwax Footwear Cleaning Gel™, and if it is relatively new or recently re-waterproofed, water resistance (DWR) will be restored simply by cleaning. However, once you have worn your footwear extensively, you will need to add DWR using Nikwax Waterproofing Wax for Leather™.
Proper cleaning can be just as important as waterproofing...
Using the correct cleaning product is just as important as using the correct waterproofing product. Common cleaning products leave a thin water-absorbing film on materials, which masks their water resistance (DWR). Therefore, always clean your waterproof footwear with Nikwax Footwear Cleaning Gel™. Remember that dirt itself works against DWR, so regular cleaning will enhance performance.
How to use
Apply Nikwax Waterproofing Wax for Leather™ by hand...
For best results, clean your footwear using Nikwax® Footwear Cleaning Gel™.
- Shake well before use.
- Massage the wax thoroughly into wet or dry clean leather using a sponge applicator or your fingers, paying particular attention to seams.
- Remove any excess with a cloth and buff to a shine.
Note: May cause darkening of leather. Test first on a hidden area. Waterproofing Wax for Leather™ will change suede to a smooth waxy surface.
Always allow footwear to dry naturally...
- Allow footwear to dry at room temperature.
- Paper can be inserted into the toe area to absorb excess moisture, which should be replaced as it becomes damp.
- Keep footwear away from fire and radiators; drying too quickly can cause leather to crack and glued soles to separate.
